Readers, I have always found that a really great way to have hope about the future is to look at upcoming books. The promise of something new from an author you love or a novel that sounds exciting is a great balm for the soul. I am fortunate because most of my work revolves around upcoming releases and it is the best, even if I do get confused about the date quite often.
Because you can never mark down books on your TBR too early, here are five science fiction and fantasy books coming in 2027 that I can’t wait to read. They sound awesome, and I hope you think so, too.
Eclipse & the Wolf by Akwaeke Emezi (Harper Voyager, February 16, 2027)
Akwaeke Emezi already has several highly lauded books to their name, and this epic fantasy sounds like another stunner. It involves blood magic and the surviving members of a massacre in the city of St. Paradise. Eclipse and her aunt, Silver, of the Orinabe clan, want their revenge on the people who wronged them, but things get complicated when they get involved with members from other clans and secrets are revealed.
The Final Death of Namjoo Han by Elaine U. Cho (S&S/Saga Press, April 27, 2027)
This Korean standalone fantasy follows Namjoo Han, who discovers that life after death takes place in a labyrinthine bathhouse, where its dead residents can die again if they try to leave. But Namjoo Han is determined to escape the afterlife, no matter how many times she dies, because she still has something important she needs to resolve in the land of the living.
A Devil of a Crime by T. Kingfisher (Tor Books, May 25, 2027)
A murder mystery written by my auto-buy author T. Kingfisher??! The way I screamed when I first heard about this! It’s about Serafina Fuller and Nicholas Fallen, two retired agents of heaven and hell, respectively, who get pulled into the murder of a priest in a small town. Being a demon, Nicholas is naturally a suspect, and he must rely on help from Serafina, an angel, to find the real killer.

Envoy by Yume Kitasei (Tor Books, July 20, 2027)
It feels like just yesterday I was raving about how much I love Yume Kitasei’s debut, The Deep Sky, and that I couldn’t wait to read more. And suddenly here we are, gearing up for her fourth novel! This one is a murder mystery about five astronauts who were sent to investigate an alien spacecraft that turned out to be empty. A decade later, one of them is murdered on the eve of the event’s anniversary, leaving the others to wonder about the truth behind that mission.
The Fox in Winter (Eternal Path Trilogy) by Antonia Hodgson(Orbit, October 5, 2027)
Yes, this one is a sequel, and holy cats, I want it right now! If you haven’t read The Raven Scholar, it’s one of the best fantasy novels of 2025, about Neema, a young scholar who takes part in a competition to become the new emperor in order to find a killer. It’s so much fun, and excellent on audio. I am really hoping that the new one is set around Cain, the fox scholar, since that’s the animal named in the title. He’s hilarious and gets most of the best lines in The Raven Scholar. Seriously, if you haven’t checked the first one out yet, you should correct that!
Okay, star bits, now take the knowledge you have learned here today and use it for good, not evil. If you want to know more about books, I talk about books pretty much nonstop (when I’m not reading them), and you can hear me say lots of adjectives about them on the Book Riot podcastAll the Books!and onInstagram and Bluesky.
