DJ Screw’s catalog is finally making it to streaming platforms this month. Starting today with the digital release of DJ Screw Originals (Volume 1), the Houston legend’s estate will roll out the classic mixtapes weekly through the end of June.
“This is for the fans who’ve always known and for those discovering him now,” the DJ Screw Estate said in a statement to Complex. “From a local legend to a global icon, his catalogue will now be accessible everywhere keeping his legacy alive one stream at a time.” Up until now, the chopped-and-screwed pioneer’s music was only available via physical CDs and YouTube uploads from fans.
DJ Screw helped define Houston’s music scene in the ’90s, when he developed a syrupy, glitchy sound by slowing down rap songs on his turntables. He passed away in 2000 at the age of 29 from a codeine overdose.
