Julie H.C. is a South Korean textile and mixed-media artist whose work operates at the intersection of traditional craftsmanship and contemporary practice. Her work focuses on material, movement and cultural memory, using fabric and the fan as her primary mediums. Her practice is a personal investigation of heritage and the present. Central to her work is the fan, which holds historical significance in Korea, particularly during the Joseon Dynasty, where it functioned not only as a utilitarian object but also as a medium of communication. Julie uses this historical context as a framework for contemporary visual and material dialogue.

For her current exhibition dubbed “RESONANCE”, the artist works exclusively with fine textiles from the Jim Thompson archive. Through detailed sewing and careful construction, she reconfigures these materials into layered, multidimensional works. Her process emphasises the inherent fluidity of fabric, using stitching to create a sense of depth and movement. Julie’s work is informed by a cross-cultural perspective shaped between East and West. She combines archival textiles with the structural form of the fan to create a space where personal memory and cultural history intersect. The work is intended not only as a visual composition but as a tactile field that connects historical craftsmanship with contemporary artistic language.

In Tethered Peace, Julie H.C. presents a striking mixed-media work that maps Eurasia across fine silk, transforming geography into a meditation on human connection, fragility and collective responsibility. Delicately layered with silk yarn and intricate sewing techniques, each nation retains its own cultural identity while remaining physically and symbolically bound to the next through invisible threads that run across the composition. At the heart of the work lies the recurring motif of the fan — a symbol of grace, movement and utopian peace — reimagined here as both a personal and universal language.

Inspired by the “butterfly effect” of recent global conflicts, the work reflects on how actions in one part of the world inevitably ripple across borders, shaping lives far beyond their point of origin. The work ultimately becomes more than a visual statement — it is an expression of interconnectedness, resilience, and hope for a more conscious future.
