Moses Sumney Releasing Debut Film Soundtrack

Moses Sumney is dropping his first movie soundtrack, a collaboration with composer Joseph Shirley for director Aleshea Harris’s debut project, Is God Is. The film is in theaters now, and today, Sumney has shared “Sins of the Father,” a song he made with the singer-songwriter Kara Jackson. Listen to that below, ahead of the soundtrack’s release this Friday, via Lakeshore.

Shirley said in a press release that collaborating with Sumney “was an utterly captivating and life-affirming creative experience for me. His connection to music is so intuitive, mythic yet still very tactile and progressive.” Shirley added that the pair “explored many genres and moods together,” tapping into the film’s mix of Southern gothic, Greek tragedy, and modern thriller.

Though this is his first soundtrack, Sumney is no stranger to the screen: He had a role in the ill-starred HBO show The Idol and, in 2024, appeared alongside Halsey in Ti West’s Maxxxine. He recently acted with Lupita Nyong’o, Sandra Oh, and Peter Dinklage in Saheem Ali’s production of Twelfth Night.
