Balvenie 16 Year Old French Oak
It took three countries to create Balvenie’s latest Scotch. For the first time in nearly a decade, the Scottish distillery added a new permanent member to their Cask Finishes range. For this 16-year-old juice, single malt whisky is aged in American oak casks before finishing in French oak casks. What makes this expression so interesting is that those French oak casks were used to Pineau des Charentes, a style of fortified wine that’s a little bit like cognac. The result is a whisky that tastes like Pineau but lacks the syrupy sweetness of the wine, so expect hits of citrus—peels and all—and ginger.
