Sam Hunt Plans to Finish Third Studio Album ‘by Late Spring’

Sam Hunt has some news on the new-music front, telling RADIO.COM’s Katie Neal that a full album may be finished sooner than later. But fans might not want to circle their calendars just yet.

Chatting with Neal as part of the Superstar Power Hour, Hunt says work on his upcoming third studio album is underway. It’ll eventually be the follow up to his sophomore set, Southside, which only just came about in April of 2020, and it sounds like the “Body Like a Back Road” hit maker is charging full steam ahead. Stars typically wait at least two years in between album releases (unless they’re Taylor Swift), so Hunt is right on schedule, with plans to reassess the situation after a month-long songwriting trip to Florida in March.

“Now I’m planning on hopefully finishing the record or getting closer to having a full record by late spring,” Hunt reveals.

Looking freshly clean shaven after a photoshoot, Hunt went on to explain some of his most-recent work — including the birth of the moody groove on his current single, “Breaking Up Was Easy in the ’90s.”

“Usually I like to write my own ideas for my records because I typically pull them from life in some capacity, but this was an idea that my buddy Josh Osborne had,” he says of the new track. “Sometimes you’ll have an idea and you don’t know whether it’s going to work out or not until you write the song. But this was an idea that I had pretty well decided was going to go on the record, even before we wrote the song. So, I was just holding it ’til the ninth hour and we ended up writing that song just maybe a few weeks before putting out the record.”

All in all, Sam Hunt sounds optimistic about the next phase of his career — and seems intent on making the best of the bad situation that 2020 was. Even with a global pandemic and the fallout from a late-2019 DUI arrest to contend with, the star was still able to score a Number One hit with “Hard to Forget” and top the country album charts, so his chances for a bright future seem good.

“So far, so good,” Hunt says. “I’ve just been getting my day-to-day in order, eating healthier, work, trying to work out, and shake off 2020. The next chapter will be getting back in the studio and trying to write.”
