It’s finally here! On Wednesday, the first official photos from the upcoming Beetlejuice sequel were released, and they’re showcasing the return of several beloved characters and the introduction of two additions to the story.
In case you didn’t know, on Sept. 6, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice will be released in theaters. The sequel reunites director Tim Burton with several original cast members from the 1988 film, including Michael Keaton as the eponymous ghost.
They’ll be joined by several stars new to the franchise, including Jenna Ortega as Astrid Deetz, Lydia’s daughter.
Willem Dafoe and Monica Bellucci have also been cast as new characters.
As for the first-look photos just released, one is a standalone of Michael as Betelgeuse.
The second shows Catherine, Jenna, Winona, and Justin at what appears to be a graveside funeral. These costumes! Catherine’s hat, Jenna’s jacket, Winona’s glasses, and Justin’s coat are everything.
Entertainment Weekly was the first to report the first-look photos, and Tim Burton told the publication the sequel will chronicle a death in the Deetz family decades after the first film.
A press release for the film reveals more about the sequel’s plot, noting that an “unexpected tragedy” brings the Deetz family back to Winter River, the setting of the first film.
Last month, the title was announced, and a poster was released.
