There are no shortages of Porsche 911-based restomods and while Singer and others are already on it in terms of transforming 964 911s into hypercar-style exotic machines, another new name has now cropped up: Theon Design. This is a UK-based firm that also delivers ‘reimagined’ Porsche 911s (964s) while also offering to source a donor car to the customer along with full restorations as well. Its latest car, called, Theon Design HK002 is their third commissioned car and the second one to Hong Kong. HK002 is based on a fully restored Porsche 911 (964) while having a gorgeous design along with a potent powertrain. Like all restomods, it’s all handmade craftsmanship as here a 964 911 is stripped-back-to-bare-metal and fully restored. Each component is modelled in 3D design while the car is finished in steel along with the fact that the bumpers and a spoiler are manufactured in carbon fibre by an F1 supplier. Theon will also do full body commissions in carbon fibre- should a customer desire so.
There are also some lovely design details including those electrically adjustable, machined billet aluminium mirrors along with those stunning deep-dish wheels. Those sensuous haunches are perfect fodder for a gorgeous design and it takes the 964 as a canvas albeit turning it further into an art on wheels sculpture. It is still a 964 although more distinctive and beautiful. Lastly, those quad exhausts poking out are perhaps one of the few signs of modernity while hinting at the power on offer.
The Theon Design Porsche is less radical but purer as a restomod while the powertrain is a 3.8-litre naturally aspirated flat-six producing 371bhp and 300lb/ft of torque. There are other engine options ranging from 3.6- to 4.0- litre naturally aspirated or turbocharged. It features independent throttle bodies, flowed and ported heads, a lightened and balanced bottom end, Mahle barrels and pistons, Carrillo rods and custom profile camshafts. The drive is taken to the rear wheels through a fully rebuilt G50 six-speed manual gearbox from the 993, while the car crouches even closer to the ground than a 964 RS with KW Variant 3 dampers all around.
The approach is also seen with the components as Theon Design replaced the 964’s original air-conditioning, and power-steering units with more efficient ones. They are now positioned low-down in the front of the car, which helps create a near-ideal 50:50 weight distribution. Weight has been kept in check too since this car weighs in at just 1248kg.
Inside, the cabin is period correct and it does have a lively colour scheme: Recaro front seats finished in semi-aniline green leather with a Spinneybeck weave and contrasting yellow stripe. Some exotic car references include a centre console draped in carbon fibre and then wrapped in leather, while also featuring exposed carbon panels. The Nardi steering wheel was custom stitched to match the car’s interior by Nardi itself.
Then you also get a leather-wrapped carbon fibre fuel tank cover and a 964 RS strut-brace, wrapped in woven leather.
Some modern amenities have been added to the cabin although the aesthetics have not been messed with. There is a hidden reversing camera screen, which flips down once the driver engages reverse gear while even the stereo unit is hidden- hence giving the cabin a clutter-free look. A magnetic wireless charger, mounted behind the dashboard means that a smartphone can be attached, providing a control for the sound system and satellite navigation.
The pricing is not as stratospheric as some of the new restomods but you will still need to cough up $500,000- excluding the cost of the donor car but there are already enough wealthy 911 lovers since the company has a large order bank. Hence, the Theon Design Porsche 911 is a tasteful restomod while standing out from the plethora of other 911-based restomods.
