Vartan Grogorian was a world-renowned philanthropic foundation and university leader, historian, and humanist. He is credited with saving the New York Public Library (NYPL) system in the 1980s. Unfortunately, he passed away last April at 87 after being hospitalized for stomach pain. Born to Armenian parents in Tabriz, Iran, Mr. Grogorian arrived in America in 1956 to study history and the humanities at Stanford University. He was the president of the NYPL (from 1981 to 1989) and smartly used his charm to fund the library, and its brand building after significant budget cuts a decade ago.
Spanning over 2600 square feet, Vartan Grogorian resided on the 18th floor of 1931 built pre-war building, The Parc Vendome, at 340 West 57th St., near Columbus Circle. Emery Roth designed it. Mr. Grogorian bought this condo for $3.2 million in 1997.
Upon entry, you’re greeted by a large foyer lined with bookshelves, leading directly to the large living room with a wood-burning fireplace and numerous windows, allowing the natural light to spill in. The condo features two primary bedrooms with an en-suite bathroom, while the third bedroom can double as a home office. Adjacent to the formal living room is a dining room, which connects to a cozy den and the kitchen, loaded with beautiful cabinetry and countertops. The new owners would enjoy this magnificent property while having easy access to Central Park, Carnegie Hall, Columbus Circle, Lincoln Center, and more!
“As President from 1981–89, his leadership and tenacity revitalized and reaffirmed the Library as the preeminent civic and educational institution that New Yorkers know and love today,” the NYPL said in a statement.
The home, located at 340 West 57th Street Apartment 18C, is listed for $4,350,000 by brokers Lisa Tarnopol Deslauriers and Linda Reiner of Coldwell Banker Warburg.
