Last week, Jacqueline Avant, the wife of legendary music executive Clarence Avant, was shot and killed during a home invasion at their Beverly Hills home. Police arrested a suspect who was caught burglarizing another home after he shot himself in the foot. Now the suspect has officially been charged with murder.
According to TMZ, on Monday, the L.A. County District Attorney’s office announced that Aariel Maynor was charged with murder, attempted murder, and felon with a firearm. He was also charged with two counts of residential burglary with person present.
As previously reported, Jacqueline was shot and killed during a home invasion that took place at her home on December 1st. She was fatally shot, and a security guard that was present at the home was shot at, but not injured. Clarence Avant was also home at the time of the shooting and was left unharmed.
Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón said, “Mrs. Avant was a treasured member of our community. Her generosity and good will touched so many lives. My office is working closely with the Los Angeles and Beverly Hills police departments in the investigation and prosecution of this case. We must continue to work together to hold accountable the people who commit violent crimes against our community.”
The suspect was arrested the same day of the shooting after he was found six miles away at another home. In the process of breaking into another home, he shot himself with the same weapon police believe was the same weapon used to kill Jacqueline. At the moment, authorities are not sure of the motive behind the shooting.
After the news of Jacqueline’s passing, condolences started to pour in from all over. Tyler Perry said, “My heart breaks for Clarence and Nicole and all the Avant family. This world can be so cruel and cold!! I have no idea what kind of sub-human could shoot an 81-year-old woman, and in her own home. But you can rest assured that every available resource will be used to find whoever is responsible for this awful nightmare. This is tremendously sad.”
Clarence Avants work has spanned over decades. Not only is he known for his work in music, but also in politics, film, and much more.
We continue to send our deepest condolence to the Avant family during this time.
