Caroline Jones announced today (Oct. 22) that her sophomore album, Antipodes, will be released November 12. The project features 13 tracks, many of which were recorded during a seven-month trek Jones took to New Zealand with her now-fiancé. This trip also spawned the album title, a word to describe a point on earth that is diametrically opposite to another point.
“Antipodes is a term for the opposite side of the world,” Jones shared with Sounds Like Nashville. “When we use it in this context, in this country, it’s a term for Australia and New Zealand.”
“It was very special and it was an incredibly transformative time in my life because I was falling in love with my [future] husband and it was during a pandemic and I found myself in this part of the world where there was no COVID,” Jones says of the trip. “It kind of felt like the twilight zone and felt like having a gap year at age 30. It’s hard for me to describe in words the wonder and the joy and the beauty of that place and that time, but hopefully people will be able to hear it in the music and see it in the visuals that we’ve put together for them.”
Jones says the album is an evolution from her 2018 debut album, Bare Feet, and will feature a “more mature” sound with “a lot more raw energy and a lot more strength.” The project features collaborations with guitarist Joe Bonamassa and Old Dominion frontman Matthew Ramsey, among others. Zac Brown also shares co-producing credits with Jones on the project’s final track.
In addition to announcing the album, Jones is premiering the music video for album track, “No Daylight,” exclusively with Sounds Like Nashville today. The video for the joyful love song was entirely shot and edited by Jones during her trip with her fiancé, giving fans an up-close glimpse into the stunning New Zealand landscape and the adventure that inspired the project.
“It’s very personal footage from New Zealand, which I normally don’t show, but for this song I really wanted people to be able to see and feel what it felt like there and what inspired the song in the first place,” says Jones.
Antipodes follows Jones’ 2018 debut as well as her 2019 EP, Chasin’ Me. Along with readying her new album, Jones has also been touring with Zac Brown Band on The Comeback Tour and will join the band in opening for The Rolling Stones on November 11.
