What was it like the first time you realized music is what you wanted to do as your life’s work?
I think when I’m doing music or anything that energizes that same creative mindset for me, that’s when I’m thriving. I think I realized that a few years ago and that’s when I decided if I could do what I am passionate about for a living, I would do anything to achieve that!
Who was the most encouraging with your talent?
I would definitely name my parents for being very encouraging about my motivations, which is very important to me. I would also like to mention my friend Cepheid Thidwick who has been supporting my music from day one when no one else outside my immediate family was. I will never forget her for that, and that’s why I’ve given her the nickname Mother Amusement!
Was there anyone that was the least?
I wouldn’t name any names but I definitely had plenty of quote-unquote “friends” who either ignored me when I needed the support or just pretended to support me to get something in return. I learned early to cut that toxicity out of my life and find friends that really do care and things have been much better since then!
You make performing seem seamless. How much practice goes into what you do?
Definitely lots of practice! I make the effort to practice every day even for just a little bit. This may or may not be surprising but performing doesn’t really come naturally to me, I’m a deeply introverted person, so I work very hard to get where I am. So saying that it seems seamless means a lot to hear!
With all the successes you’ve experienced in your career, can you recall a time where you were tested in it?
Yeah, there were definitely times early on where I questioned whether working this hard on my music career was worth it, I think most people have that thought at least a few times, making a career in music is really tough.
How did you make the decision to keep on going for your goals?
Every time I have ever had thoughts of doubt, like if I had a bad turn-out for a gig or little engagement on something, the answer to “is it worth it?” is always “yes” because I love doing this and even if only a few people care at all I’d still do it because it’s what I love!
Who or what did you turn to when you needed a refocus?
I have built a very strong community of fellow musicians and friends that I can always turn to. We’re all in the same boat, trying really hard to make it and do what we love. We all support each other and there’s no egos so it’s always a very reassuring environment. Whenever I get doubtful, I think of all these other great musicians working hard against all odds no matter what and I know I can’t let them down because I’d be let down if they gave up too!
Tell our audience about your latest passion project!
We’re just now finishing up production on our second album! Despite the fact that our debut album came out only about half a year ago, we’ve been working on this album for even longer than that and I’m so excited for people to hear what we’ve been up to since we finished that first album!
How did you come up with what you wanted to do next?
Well the debut Modern Amusement album, which I’m very proud of still, was overall a pretty upbeat collection of songs and I’m the kind of person who kind of wants to do the opposite of whatever I just did when I move on to the next project, so the second focuses more on darker topics and is a little heavier than the first sound-wise. I was inspired by albums like Weezer’s Pinkerton, Say Anything’s …Is A Real Boy, and My Chemical Romance’s Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge to make an album that’s a little more raw with really honest and true songwriting. I hope people will like this other side of Modern Amusement!
How are you making time for everything you do!
I like to keep myself busy when it comes to working on music so I kind of just thrive in the chaos I guess, haha! Whenever I have time set aside for music I use up every bit of it! And it doesn’t feel like work because I love doing it!
What are you focusing on right now going forward with your music?
For me it’s always been focusing on improving my songwriting craft! It’s the most important thing to me!
How did that come about?
I’ve always thought that if you don’t write great songs, it doesn’t matter how good of a musician you are because people won’t listen! So ever since I set out to be a musician I made sure that was priority number one, to always try to be a better songwriter!
