The Highwomen Cover Lady Gaga’s ‘Highway Unicorn (Road to Love)’

The Highwomen cover a Lady Gaga classic for the pop icon’s new album re-issue, teaming up with Brittney Spencer and Madeline Edwards for “Highway Unicorn (Road to Love).” And it turns the electro-anthem upside down.

A bonus track off Gaga’s Born This Way The Tenth Anniversary album (which is out now), the new version takes Gaga’s pulsating dance floor jam and gives it a windblown Western feel. Featuring a twangy tumbleweed sound and heady harmonies — plus an old school guitar-slinger vibe — the collaborators help reimagine a tune about the search for the most mythical treasure of all: true love.

The Highwomen is a country supergroup made up of Brandi Carlile, Maren Morris, Amanda Shires and Natalie Hemby. The group was formed in 2016 and won this year’s Grammy award for Best Country Song, with the trophy for “Crowded Table” going home with co-writers Carlile, Hemby and Lori McKenna. Spencer is a country artist on the rise and Edwards is a genre-defying newcomer blending elements of jazz and Southern soul, and according to her instagram page, the collaborators were all introduced by Mickey Guyton.

Their version “Highway Unicord (Road to Love)” is just one of six new tracks included on Born This Way The Tenth Anniversary, as Lady Gaga features artists who are “representing and advocating for the LGBTQIA+ community.”

The superstar’s original Born This Way album was released in 2011 as her second album, and has been celebrated as an inclusive soundtrack ever since. Her “Born This Way” title track has especially been held up as an empowering anthem. Others submitting Gaga covers include Kylie Minogue, Big Freedia, Ben Platt, Years & Years and masked country artist Orville Peck.
