Roommates, as Pride Month continues, Las Vegas Raiders star Carl Nassib decided to make a very important announcement. In a video message posted to Instagram, Carl Nassib confirmed that he is gay—making him the very first active NFL player in history to publicly come out as gay.

Carl Nassib instantly became a top trending topic on social media when he formally announced that he is gay and making history in the process. His announcement officially makes him the very first active NFL player to come out—and he said that his decision was inspired by wanting to increase visibility for the LGBTQ+ community.

In the video that he posted to his Instagram, Nassib explained that he felt that now was the right time for him to share with the world one of the most personal and important parts of his life:

“I actually hope that one day videos like this and the whole coming out process are just not necessary, but until then, I am going to do my best and do my part to cultivate a culture that is accepting, that is compassionate.”

Carl Nassib also revealed that he plans to donate $100,000 donation to the Trevor Project, a LGBTQ+ youth suicide prevention organization. In response to his coming out, the NFL tweeted a heartwarming message. “The NFL family is proud of you, Carl,” the tweet read.

You’ll recall that back in 2014, Michael Sam was the first openly gay NFL draft pick but, according to NBC Sports he was not on a regular season roster and never played a game following being drafted with the St. Louis Rams—meaning that Nassib is indeed the first active player to come out as gay.
