After taking some time to reflect on his recent controversies, Morgan Wallen felt inspired to write a song and share his thoughts through new music.
Wallen posted his latest lyrical endeavor on IGTV Video, noting that he wrote the track with his mother in mind. He titled it, “Thought You Should Know,” and laid out how she has been a support system during his rocky moments.
“What’s goin’ on mama / Something’s just dawned on me/ I ain’t been home in some months / Been chasin’ songs and women / Making some bad decisions / God knows I’m drinking too much,” Wallen sings while he plays his acoustic guitar.
He continues on, asking her how things are going back at home and if she is doing well before revealing how her love has made such a solid impact in his life.
“I thought you should know that all those prayers you thought you wasted on me / must have finally made their way on through / I thought you should know that I really like this girl down in Jefferson City and turns out she’s a lot like you,” he adds in the final chorus.
Several country music artists commented on the social media song debut, with Dustin Lynch sending along a supportive “Hell yes” and Old Dominion calling it “Pretty awesome.” Miranda Lambert even dropped in on the video, and revealed her hand in the song’s creation.
“Thanks for letting me and @nicatnitemusic write this special song with you. Sounds great,” she wrote.
Wallen has been pretty quiet in the industry since a video of him using racist slurs surfaced back in February. He also caused quite a stir when he was cut from his original Saturday Night Live debut in October of 2020 after he was seen partying without social distancing or wearing a mask on social media videos. He was then asked back in December, where he apologized and even poked fun at himself for his actions in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Wallen has not confirmed whether or not he will release a studio version of “Thought You Should Know.”
