What to expect with BMW’s first All-Electric Gran Coupé, BMW i4

With the shift towards alternative energy resources to power the powerful luxury supercars, BMW has taken a step ahead to create the brand’s first all-electric Gran Coupé – the BMW i4. The brand isn’t a stranger to acing electric cars, be it the iconic BMW i3 or the i8. The 2022 BMW i4 is a four-door Gran Coupé competing with Tesla Motors 3 and the Audi e-Tron GT. The vehicle is slated to be launched later in 2021.

The beautiful specimen was introduced in March at the BMW Group Annual Conference in Munich. The BMW i4 will be accompanied by a BMW M Performance model as well. The BMW i4 model line will be available in different versions covering ranges of up to 590km (WLTP) and up to 300 miles* (EPA). With a power output of up to 390kW / 530HP, the BMW i4 can accelerate from zero to 100km/h in around 4 seconds, only 0.5 seconds behind its Tesla competitor. The brand would eventually release specific details over the coming weeks, but here is what we can expect from the BMW i4 all-electric Gran Coupé!

“With its sporty looks, best in class driving dynamics, and zero local emissions, the BMW i4 is a true BMW. It makes the heart of the BMW brand now beat fully electric,” said Pieter Nota, member of the Board of Management of BMW AG responsible for Customer, Brands, Sales.

Powerful Acceleration and Long Distance Comfort

Being an all-electric vehicle, the BMW i4 promises fascinating dynamics, as it is equipped to deliver extraordinary performance values up to 390 kW/530 HP. The first-ever purely electric Gran Coupé will guarantee plenty of driving pleasure with a range of up to 600 kilometers*, proving to be of great versatility and perfect suitability for everyday use. The performance and agility aren’t just restricted to the city; the BMW i4 would also be the ideal companion for long-distance journeys as the car is equipped with a 150-kilowatt charging capacity that can provide up to 80 percent of the car’s driving range in just 35 minutes. A model-specific damper technology will ensure that the catapult-like acceleration is a stimulating yet controlled driving experience without any drive slip or course corrections.

The BMW i4 is a vehicle concept with optimized aerodynamics and balanced weight distribution, which will enable a high level of agility and precision – further increased by the fine-tuning of the drive and suspension components. Optimized suspension technology promises an impressive and effortless gliding towards its destination, even at higher speeds and more difficult traction conditions. “The BMW Concept i4 brings electrification to the core of the BMW brand. The design is dynamic, clean, and elegant. In short: a perfect BMW that happens to be zero-emission.” Said Adrian van Hoyydonk, Senior Vice President BMW Group Design.

Electrifying Aesthetics

As a fully-fledged five-seater, the BMW i4 is expected to provide optimum seating comfort with generous space for the head and legs in the back. The long wheelbase with short overhangs and a smooth roofline will define the sporty-elegant shape of the BMW Gran Coupé. The interiors are minimalist and have an understated use of different materials, creating a modern yet luxurious ambiance. The warm Gold Bronze accent strips blend into the white leather upholstery and light wood trim, lending a high-class touch to the car’s interior. Overall, expect a seamlessly structured, bright, and an airy cabin that brings across the tranquillity and authority of this electric drive system.

Innovation meets minimalism

The future of infotainments is creating hands-free commands, uncluttered systems, and a decrease in the number of haptic touches. The BMW i4 is expected to have the iDrive 8 – that allows multiple voice commands that include Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and 5G mobile capability. The 14.9-inch touchscreen is integrated with a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel on a huge BMW Curved Display on the dashboard. The brand emphasizes the ease of the driver. To that end, every element in the front of the cabin is trained on the driver—the front section of the interior around the BMW Curved Display majors on the pared-back design.

The 2022 BMW i4 hasn’t yet been tested for by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) – we hope the brand offers all the latest driver-assistance technology. The brand hasn’t officially launched the price of the car yet but is estimated to be starting at $50,000.
