The 2021 Academy Awards Featured Some Big Wins & Major Snubs As Chadwick Boseman, Viola Davis & Andra Day Leave Empty-Handed

Roommates, after months of anticipation for Hollywood’s biggest night, the Academy Awards is officially over—and while there were definitely some notable winners filled with #BlackExcellence, there were also some major snubs. Many were shocked when in a matter of minutes, Chadwick Boseman, Viola Davis and Andra Day all lost the Academy Awards they were nominated for at this year’s ceremony.

The 2021 Academy Awards started off on a great note, with Daniel Kaluuya winning the first acting award of the night, collecting his first Oscar for his role as Fred Hampton in ‘Judas And The Black Messiah.’ The #BlackExcellence winning streak continued as Netflix’s ‘Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom’ picked up an armful of Oscars for Best Hair & Makeup and Best Costume Design.

These wins were followed by Disney’s ‘Soul’ winning for Best Animated Feature, the crowd favorite film that featured Jamie Foxx voicing the lead character. When it was time to announce the winner for Best Original Song, H.E.R. didn’t have to wait long to hear her name, as she also won her very first Oscar for the song ‘Fight For You’ from ‘Judas And The Black Messiah.’

Finally, the top two acting awards were saved for the last few minutes of the show—as many were ready to cheer on Chadwick Boseman, Viola Davis and Andra Day for winning…but sadly, that wasn’t the case.

Chadwick, who was nominated for Best Actor for his final performance in ‘Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,’ lost to veteran actor Anthony Hopkins. For the Best Actress category, both Viola Davis and Andra Day lost the Oscar to Frances McDormand.

Social media had a lot to say about the Oscar snubs as Chadwick, Viola, and Andra were top trending topics as soon as it was announced they didn’t win.
