Master P’s Son Hercy Miller Says He Chose Tennessee State For Basketball Because He Wants To Put The Spotlight On HBCUs

TSR HBCUuuu Know: In case y’all didn’t know, Master P’s son Hercy Miller is one of the top high school basketball players in the nation.

Taking after his father’s hoop skills, Hercy is one of the most sought after players–with offers from powerhouse schools such as USC and Missouri–and with all the attention he was getting, he felt it was important to choose Tennessee State University over some of the major Division I programs to bring a much needed spotlight to HBCUs.

“I’ve always grown up being a leader…I want to make a difference,” Hercy told Stephen A. Smith following his big reveal, with P alongside him. “Most people think that HBCUs are mid-major schools, they can’t do it. They have a lot of pros who come out of HBCUs…they just don’t have the spotlight. So with me, I want to put the spotlight on all HBCUs around. I just want to see the bigger picture and change the narrative.”

Master P agreed that his son’s decision would be a game-changer for the Black community and HBCUs.

“This is so big for the culture with my son going to an HBCU and going to Tennessee State. This is going to change the narrative. This is about economic empowerment and teaching that, and being able to make sure that these HBCUs are in the spotlight,” Master P told ESPN. “I think this is a movement. I think so many kids behind him will be coming to do this now – I’m talking about top athletes like Hercy.”

Master P, Hercy and their family are continuing a trend of bringing attention to HBCU sports with their celebrity status. Former NFL star Deion Sanders brought his skills to Jackson State University, where he serves as head coach. Deion’s son announced last November that he’d be joining his father and playing football there.
