Selena Quintanilla, Salt-N-Pepa, And More Awarded With The ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’ At The Grammys

Roommates the Grammys was yesterday, and everyone is still talking about the winners, fashion, performances, and those who were snubbed on the innanet. Megan Thee Stallion and Beyoncé racked up and made history, but some other big awards were given out last night. Outside of winning a Grammy award, another huge honor is winning a “Lifetime Achievement Award.” Last night the late Selena Quintanilla was honored with that award alongside Salt -N-Pepa, Grandmaster Flash And The Furious Five, Marilyn Horne, Talking Heads, and Lionel Hampton.

Fans of Selena have kept her legacy alive through her music throughout the years and recently through her Netflix show and have looked forward to seeing her be honored. The Recording Academy describes this prestigious award as “Celebrating performers who have made outstanding contributions of artistic significance to the field of recording.” In 1994, Selena’s won a Grammy for Best Mexican-American Album for “Selena Live!,” which marked the first time a female Tejano artist won the category.

Selena’s family has been vocal about her music throughout the years. In a recent interview with ET, her sister, Suzette Quintanilla, spoke out about Selena receiving this award many years after her passing. “Twenty-five years later, and who would have ever thought that she would be honored with this Lifetime Achievement Award? I’m very proud, and I know she would also be in regards to the fact that we are Mexicanos-Americanos, we’re Mexican-Americans, and this is happening,” Suzette stated. “It’s huge. It’s really huge for a different couple of reasons. More importantly, the fact that her career and her life is still being celebrated so many years later.”

Salt of Salt-N-Pepa also spoke out on receiving the award by sharing a message on her Instagram. She wrote, “In a time where we are not able to be present for graduations, weddings, birthdays and all kinds of monumental life moments, We’re grateful. Thanks to the academy for the honor, Lifetime Achievement Award. ”

While many were excited about the award, several took to Twitter to express their disappointment in Selena’s tribute at the virtual awards ceremony. One tweeted,” Y’all had 3 HOURS (almost 4), and you couldn’t fit a tribute for Selena Quintanilla in there?! Even though she won the lifetime achievement award?! I’m over it.”

Congratulations to all the winners. We love to see it.
