Dan + Shay, Mickey Guyton Make GRAMMYs History

Dan + Shay got their names solidified in the history books at Sunday night’s GRAMMY awards when they took home the award for Best Country Duo/Group Performance for their hit song “10,000 Hours” with Justin Bieber. The latest accolade makes the duo the only act to win the award for three consecutive years. They previously won the award in 2020 for “Speechless” and in 2019 for “Tequila.” Dan + Shay accepted the prize via video and were visibly shocked and excited when their names were called.

“As you can tell, we’re very excited. We have no speech prepared,” said the band’s Dan Smyers while his duo partner Shay Mooney laughed in excitement.

“I always gets so nervous at these things,” Smyers continued. “Thank you so much to our fans, to Justin’s fans, to country radio, to radio for playing this song, the Academy, everybody who voted for us, it truly means the world. Y’all changed our lives in more ways than you know.”

Shay then chimed in, sending his thanks to his young sons, his wife, Hannah, the song’s co-writers and their record label.

“My hands are shaking right now. This is absolutely crazy,” he said. “I want to thank my wife, my two little boys at home, Asher and Ames. Hannah, thank you so much for supporting us and for being our inspiration every day.”

Another history-making moment at Sunday night’s award show came in the form of Mickey Guyton, who was the first Black solo female artist to be nominated for an award in the country music category. The singer was up for Best Country Solo Performance for her powerful song, “Black Like Me.” She also performed the song on the show, making her the first Black female country artist to perform at the GRAMMYs. This morning, Guyton shared the performance on social media and dedicated it to her one-month-old son, Grayson.

“This still feels like a dream. I couldn’t have done this without you. Thank you for your prayers and love on a day that I will remember forever,” she wrote. “This is for my son. Everything that I am is for him.”
