Actor Steven Yeun is one of the greats. If there was ever any doubt, it’s all gone now after his stunning turn in Minari, the emotional new film about a Korean-American family that moves to Arkansas. Yeun plays the father at the center of the story, and his moving performance has already garnered big buzz this awards season. And now, he’s on the cover of GQ’s April issue.
Yeun spoke with GQ editor Chris Gayomali (who first interviewed him over pizza a few years back for the magazine) about his upbringing and career. Their conversations went long and deep on everything from Christian rock to representation in Hollywood. Yeun is a spiritual guy, whether he’s dabbling in primal astrology (look it up) or praying on set. “I think faith gets a weird connotation these days, that it’s so directly tied with the religious church,” says Yeun. “But faith is just a will to live, right? Just the will to be, and be here, and do the work.”
Oh, and for all you Walking Dead fans: Yeun discusses Glenn’s death, how he could have pushed to keep him alive—and why he didn’t.
For his cover shoot, Yeun ventured out into the California plains with stylist George Cortina and photographer Diana Markosian. Check out the story about Steven Yeun’s new frontier at the link below.
