Old Dominion Confirm Unexpected Album Created During Pandemic

Old Dominion apparently spent 2020 doing what they do best, as they’ve admitted a whole new album is on the way.

Speaking with RADIO.COM’s Katie Neal for the Superstar Power Hour, the hit making country band opened up about a brand new album that fans will soon hear — even though it wasn’t planned before the pandemic struck.

“We definitely saw an opportunity to do something different,” front man Matthew Ramsey told Neal, confirming that the band left Nashville to write and record during a musical getaway that let them “spend some real time on something.”

It turns out the five piece group of Ramsey, Trevor Rosen, Brad Tursi, Geoff Sprung and Whitt Sellers moved their base of operations to Asheville, North Carolina, and spent three weeks focusing on nothing but music. The guys say they only expected to leave with a few new songs, but ended up with a whole new project featuring a very different feel from their previous work.

“We thought if we went out to Asheville, maybe we would get four or five songs, and that was the goal,” Ramsey explained. “And we wound up with a whole album.”

Old Dominion say they chose Asheville over studios near the Joshua Tree National Park in California and another in Texas, saying Asheville had everything they needed — plus it was far enough from Nashville to make a difference, but close enough to get back to their families quickly. Used the time away from everyday life’s pressures to experiment with things they’d never tried before, and fans will notice the difference when new music starts rolling out.

“We made an album that we definitely couldn’t have made here in Nashville I think, just because… our lives are here and there’s a lot to do,” Ramsey went on.

The band also opened up about other ways they spent 2020, as well as the genesis of tracks like “One Man Band” and “Never Be Sorry,” and who came up with the idea for their other 2020 album — the infamous Meow Mix. There’s no word yet on when the new album project will arrive, or about its title, but we’ll stay tuned for more to come.
